This dark painted frame with a gilded slip in white gold, flatters the soft deep tones within this atmospheric painting by artist Benjamin Warner.

An undercoat of warm grey was painted over a gesso base, with a topcoat in black brushed over this. To seal this finish and add warmth, a brown wax was applied and buffed to a soft sheen.

The narrow slip defines the outline of the picture and the gilded finish accentuates highlights within the painting, catching and reflecting light onto the surface of the canvas.

This technique of layering paints creates depth and interest and serves to soften the overall look. A solid black finish can look flat and harsh and would overpower the subtle tones of this work.
