A simple reverse profile with a yellow gesso base, which has been over painted in a light warm grey and then distressed to reveal the golden undertone. The addition of an angled inner 'slip' around the canvas leads the eye into the painting and is gilded in 16-carat gold, adding a touch of restrained opulence.

'Slips' are inserted between a frame and the artwork and serve a practical purpose by holding glass away from the surface of the work but are often used merely as an additional decorative surround. Available in a variety of shapes and finishes, a slip can be toned to blend or contrast with the rest of the frame or can be covered with fabric, such as Hessian.
