Shadow frames are so called because they allow a visual gap, or shadow, around the artwork. This style of surround is particularly successful for works on canvas and allows the eye to roam freely around the entire picture, where close framing can seem to visually confine or restrict an image.

The addition of a deeply canted inner slip serves to accentuate the sense of depth.
